Distance Learning at Wilcox

DIstance Learning Starts on 8/17/2020

Dear Charger Community,

It is our honor to welcome you to Wilcox for the 2020-2021 school year. All Wilcox students will begin the school year in distance learning on Monday, August 17, 2020 and continue in this learning platform through the entire first semester/December break.  We recognize that distance learning may not be the preferred setting to begin the school year. District and site staff have been working to grow and refine our distance learning instructional practices and student supports throughout the summer. Having learned a lot from our shared experience this past spring, working on a variety of summer committees and participating in the upcoming staff professional development days, our staff are energized and prepared to offer rigorous and robust learning experiences for all of our students as well as provide the appropriate student support throughout the school year.

As we prepare for our fall semester of distance learning we are simultaneously preparing for when we move into a hybrid learning format and will have a healthy, safe and supportive environment ready for students when the time comes.

We have missed our students and look forward to welcoming them all back from summer vacation. Please take some time to carefully review the important updates and information below in order to be prepared for the new school year.

With a Charger Strong spirit,

Kristin Gonzalez

Enrollment and Registration Information for New and Returning Students

The district has been sending communications to families regarding changes to the enrollment and registration process for new and returning students. Please be sure to visit their website, link here, for more information about what you need to do to make sure your student is enrolled or registered properly for this school year. Some important changes to note:

  • All new students enrolling in the current academic year (2020-2021), must enroll through our online enrollment system

  • All students currently enrolled in preschool through 12th grade and in our post-secondary program will need to complete the Annual Student Information Update through our online enrollment system by July 31, 2020

  • Families who will have a student enrolled in grades 3, 6, and 9 for the 2020-2021 and families changing address will be required to provide proof of residency when completing the Annual Student Information Update- all other grade levels/students do NOT need to complete proof of residency

  • You can schedule an appointment by contacting the Enrollment Center at (408) 423-3596,, or using our Google Appointment Calendar

Wilcox COVID Community Advisory Team

We have established a community advisory team composed of representatives from our student, parent, staff/administrator and community groups. The Wilcox COVID19 Advisory Team will serve as an advisory group to the COVID19 Administrative Task Force. The Advisory Team representatives will be able to provide insight and guidance to help Wilcox implement policies and actions to better support our students, families, and staff.

This group had its first meeting recently and will meet regularly to inform and advise the school administration through distance learning, transition into hybrid learning and transition into full time in-person learning. Via subcommittees the group will focus their work in the following areas: Assessment; Health/Wellness/Student Support; Logistics/Operations; and Teaching/Learning

Course Offerings and Student Schedules

Student schedules have not been changed or impacted due to distance learning first semester. With few exceptions due to limited space or class balancing, student course selections made in the spring have remained the same over the summer. Students will be able to access their fall 2020 schedule on August 6, 2020 via our online student information platform - Aeries. More information and directions on how to view your schedule will be sent out during the week of August 3rd. If you have a question about your student’s schedule please contact your counselor.

Counseling Appointments

Counselors will open their calendars to appointments starting August 3rd.  You can make an appointment on the Wilcox Counseling website.  Schedule changes will only be made based on summer classes completed, or errors in course registration. We are not able to accommodate other types of schedule changes such as teacher preference. Click here to visit our counseling School Loop page.

Teachers will return to standard grading practices as outlined in our board policy. This means that we will return to letter grading rather than Credit/No Credit grading that was used this past spring.

As in the spring, students are expected to login and actively attend class on their assigned class meeting days and times.

Bell Schedules

For distance learning, we will be using the schedule below (as published in the district draft reopening plan). More details will be available in the coming weeks regarding specific start/end times for the school day and class periods.

Materials Pick-Up

In order to ensure students are fully prepared to begin rigorous course work, we have scheduled times for students to pick up necessary materials such as course books, required novels, class schedules, and other course materials from the Wilcox campus in a safe and supervised fashion. This process will be similar to how we have scheduled the materials drop off during the spring semester- grade levels will be scheduled to come on specific days and students will be assigned a time to come onto campus alphabetically by last name. More information including details and directions will be sent out to the community next week. For planning purposes, below are the grade level scheduled days.

  • Seniors, Class of 2021: Tuesday, August 11

  • Freshmen, Class of 2024: Wednesday, August 12

  • Juniors, Class of 2022: Thursday, August 13

  • Sophomores, Class of 2023: Friday, August 14

Our wellness counseling associates will begin to provide ongoing mental health counseling in mid September. Please visit our wellness page for a list of community resources. Procedures on how to request wellness check-in appointments will be posted on the wellness page once the information is available.

Freshman Orientation

We recognize that transitioning from middle school to high school is an exciting time for students. We also know that students need extra support during this transition. Traditionally we host an on campus Freshman Orientation program where incoming freshman students join us for a fun-filled day of activities, exploring the campus, seeing their friends and making new ones. We want to provide as much of that experience as possible and our Link Crew teacher advisors and student leaders have been working hard to create an online orientation experience for our incoming freshmen. Please SAVE THE DATE on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at 1pm for our virtual Freshman Orientation. We also recognize that parents need information and support during this transition as well and will be hosting an online informational meeting for parents that same day. Look for communications from us next week with more details and instructions on how students can participate. Students who need a Chromebook prior to Wednesday, August 5 for online Freshman Orientation should email Vice Principal Matt Kolda at

Athletics Update

The most recent update from Governor Newsom outlining new guidelines and directions for schools meant that we had to suspend our small cohort athletic workouts. We had great student athlete participation in the workouts and are very grateful to our athletic directors and coaching staff who volunteered their time to host the workouts and monitor compliance with health and safety guidelines.  We will resume small cohort workouts if/when we can in accordance with the county health guidelines and permission from our district office.

Last week the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) published information/dates regarding the sports seasons for this school year. You can read the detailed information by clicking on the links below. In short, there will be no sports seasons taking place during the first semester of the 2020 - 2021 school year. The fall, winter and spring sports seasons have been compacted and scheduled to take place during the spring semester with much of the winter and spring sports teams being offered at the same time. Unfortunately this means that athletes who participate in both winter and spring sports will have to make a choice as to which sport they would like to participate in.

  • Season 1: Cross Country (B & G), Field Hockey (G), Football (B & G), Volleyball (B & G), Water Polo (B & G)

  • Season 2: Badminton (B & G), Baseball, Basketball (B & G), Golf (B & G), Soccer (B & G), Softball (G), Swim & Dive, Tennis (B & G), Track & Field (B & G),  Wrestling (B & G), Lacrosse (G), Comp. Sport Cheer (G), Gymnastics (G)

CIF Athletics Update

CCS Athletics Update

In the meantime, if you are planning on playing a sport this year, we will be doing all of the requirements on Athletic Clearance which is an online platform. You can begin the process now. All participants must have this process completed before they can participate. A current pre-participation physical must be completed clearing a student athlete for participation in sports. This is different from the physical needed to enter high school. Please see our Athletic Eligibility Requirement page for more information and a link to a physical form you can take to your doctor.
