What is GAINS?
GAINS in Santa Clara Unified was founded in August 2000 when we were awarded a $20,000 grant from the Engineering Information Foundation. Since then, we have received donations from Siemens Building Technologies, Altera, Mission City Community Fund, Advanced Micro Devices, Santa Clara Schools Foundation, Synopsys, Symantec, Applied Materials, Sony, National Semi Conductor, Alza and NEC Electronics. GAINS membership is currently 140 girls of varying ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds from both Wilcox and Santa Clara high schools. The GAINS program operates on a budget of approximately $50,000.00 per year. Each dollar must come from outside sources because district and state dollars cannot go towards programs that only focus on a single gender.
This year marks GAINS 10th year of serving up opportunities to girls who are interested in non-traditional fields, particularly those related to math, science, and technology. The success of the program is evident in the 140 new and continuing members this year!
GAINS is a unique program where young women are encouraged through a variety of opportunities to learn more about future careers, visit colleges, and receive preparation for the SAT test. Young women are given the opportunity to hear and talk with female professionals currently working in non-traditional fields.
The young women are selected based on interest in science, math, engineering, technology, and business, and their desire to take part in extracurricular activities such as tutoring, test/college preparation, summer internships, lectures, job shadows, etc.
