College Guidance

The first contact with Wilcox High School counselors begins in the eighth grade when counselors visit the middle schools to program students for their ninth grade classes. UC and Cal State requirements are discussed with students. This process is repeated in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades.

Senior year guidance begins with the counselor visit to English classes to discuss the college application, financial aid, and scholarship process. Procedures for obtaining college applications, assistance with filling them out, and processes for requesting private school recommendations are all detailed to students. Cal State and UC application workshops are offered through the career center.

Check List for College Recommendations

Directions: Please complete the following Check List before turning in Counselor Recommendation Forms to the counselor from whom you wish a recommendation. Please allow three working weeks prior to due dates.

  • Complete the Senior profile (Include picture and college essay if available.)
  • Turn in the Secondary School Report, or Counselor Evaluation form for every college to which you are applying if you are not using the Common Application. Preferably type or print in black ink all personal information. It is usually in you best interest to sign the waiver of your rights to see the evaluation form.
  • Turn in the Mid-Year Reports if they are included in the application, and include an addressed, stamped envelope for each one at the end of the first semester if you are not using the Common Application.
  • Include an addressed, stamped envelope for each form that must be mailed to the college or university.? No oversized (manila) envelopes.

If you are using the Common Application, it is your responsibility to provide copies and stamped, addressed envelopes for each college to which you are applying. Although some colleges accept the Common Application, generally it is preferable to fill out the college's individual application form.
